Dirar b. ‘Amr (d. 815) was a Kufan theologian associated with the Jahmiyyah heresy.
Dirar believed that the body, or the common, persistent matter undelying all material things, is an aggregate of accidents (al-jism a’rad) which are composed and combined to subsist and exist in extramental reality. Accident here means a property that is non-essential or nonsubstantive, like a colour, weight, state, temperature. This is the bundle theory of body. Dirar b. ‘Amr says al-insan huwa a’rad mujtami’a, or man is a compound of accidents. He is critical of aristotelian or neoplatonic ideas of essences and forms, believing there is no other substance but the combination of accidents.
